Leachate Treatment

Leachate Treatment

Leachate is highly contaminated water that forms from biodegradation of organic wastes + water soluble waste + rainwater = a chemical ‘soup’ that kills all aquatic life forms and so it must be treated on site or off-site before it can be safely released into the environment.

Leachate contains two contaminants which cause major pollution of rivers and groundwaters:

  • Ammonia – even very low concentrations will kill fish and other aquatic life forms.
  • Dissolved organic compounds measured as Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) – these reduce the dissolved oxygen levels and will also destroy all aquatic organisms.
  • Other pollutants found in leachate are:
  • Pesticides & herbicides such as Mecoprop.
  • Metals such as cadmium, chromium, copper, lead etc.
  • Suspended solids
  • Dissolved methane

The following table shows published values for ammonia concentrations that will kill fish and other aquatic life forms:

Note: NH3 is the un-ionised form of ammonia; NH4+ is the ionised form.

Typical NH3 value for landfill leachate: 1000mg/l; (it can be considerable higher than this).

It should also be noted that the pH of rivers is generally above 7.0, the optimum stated is 7.4 which of course increases NH3 concentrations.

For almost 100% of cases Aerobic Biodegradation is by far the most cost effective process for ammonia removal and additionally:

  • Significantly reduces COD, pesticides, metals and suspended solids
  • Removes dissolved methane and odours

We offer several plant options including: ‐

  • Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR)
  • Fixed Film Bioreactor (MBBR)
  • Membrane Bioreactor (MBR)
  • Aerated Lagoon
  • Additional process options include:
  • Denitrification for removal of nitrate
  • Physico Chemical Treatment (PCT) for removal of metals
  • Activated carbon adsorption for removal of pesticides
  • Settlement, clarification and filtration for removal of suspended solids

Fully Mobile Treatment Capability!

Viridian can now offer on site mobile treatment plants capable of producing an effluent that can be safely discharged from site offering a considerable cost saving! We can deliver, install, commission and operate the plant on a site specific basis.

The features of the plant include:

Full Telemetry Package

  • Continuous Ammonia Metering
  • System Status
  • Flows
  • Pump Status
  • Temperature
  • Containerised Control Room

At Viridian Biotechnologies not only do we treat Contaminated Surface Waters effectively but also we can treat Contaminated Groundwaters, Leachate, Composting Leachates, Industrial Effluents and Commercial Effluents. We also offer a wide range of Consultancy services.
