Leachate Re-circulation

Leachate Re-circulation

Historically leachate re-circulation systems have suffered from poor design and insufficient capital investment. The most significant issues associated with leachate re-circulation include:

  • Leachate out-breaks
  • Dependence on re-circulation only for leachate management
  • Localised saturation
  • Preferential pathways to break-outs or to the base of the landfill
  • Perched lenses of leachate
  • In some extreme and well documented cases, badly engineered re-circulation methods may have caused major land-slips

Leachate Re-circulation

 

The re-circulation systems we design incorporate innovative irrigation technology which will ensure even dispersal of liquid at controlled rates, thus avoiding localised saturation. This technology will alleviate or completely eliminate many of the foregoing issues.

We can design the re-circulation system dispersal or emitter pipe to be laid in any configuration to suit the shape and size of a cell. The system can be installed at any level during the land filling operation. We recommend the system be laid in trenches excavated into the waste before capping or it can be covered with a final layer of waste.

  • Improved leachate treatability, e.g. high BOD leachate can be recirculated into methanogenic waste to accelerate reduction in BOD
