Landfill Gas Oxidation:

Anthropogenic methane (CH4), a significant component of landfill gas, is widely regarded as the most damaging Greenhouse Gas (GHG) and according to the UNFCCC it has a 20 year Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 56 based on a value of 1 for Carbon Dioxide (CO2). http://unfccc.int/ghg_data/items/3825.php

There is an obvious and urgent need to mitigate landfill methane release and so Viridian in partnership with the UK Environment Agency, is currently engaged on a research and development project to develop a biofilter capable of oxidising the methane and VOC’s present in landfill gas to simpler less harmful forms. The project is being funded jointly by Viridian and the Northwest Development Agency (NWDA).

The objectives of the project are to develop an environmentally sustainable and technically and commercially viable biological filter to efficiently oxidise landfill methane and other volatile organic compounds (VOC’s) such as hydrogen sulphide (H2S). The target for our biofilter will be older sites producing methane at lower levels, typically 20% concentration and less. Sites producing methane at higher levels can be managed by more conventional means, i.e. flares.
