Bio Filters

Bio Filter White Background Small02

What is biofiltration?

Biofiltration is a means of removing odorous and non-odorous gases from waste air-streams utilising multi-strain micro-organisms to biologically degrade volatile organic compounds (VOC’s) to simpler forms i.e. CO2 and water. The most important reaction of the degradation process is the oxidation of carbon, sulphur and nitrogen compounds to CO2, SO42- and NO3- and their assimilation into biomass.Multi-strain micro-organisms can even degrade petrol vapour and landfill gas to simple non-polluting forms.

Landfill Gas Treatment:

A reduction of 90-100% of the odorous VOC’s (e.g. H2S) and methane in Landfill Gas can be achieved depending on the filter design capacity.

It should be noted that biofilters also degrade Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) from landfill gas.

Petrol Vapour Treatment:

Removal of 90-100% of petrol vapour (BTEX - benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene) can be achieved depending on filter design.

The photograph shows a small biofilter designed to treat a nominal air flow rate of 20m3/hour. It comprises: waste-air inlet chamber, filter chamber, sump, automatic irrigation system and vent stack for treated air.

Viridian can design and build biofilters in a range of sizes to suit most applications e.g. up to 10,000m3/hour.

Biofilters can be supplied to include all types of monitoring including treated gas analysis, air flow-rate, pH, biomass temperature &moisture.

Remote monitoring & telemetry available.

Further technical information and assessment

available on request.
